Hostel worker sees a teen girl with her stepfather each night — one glimpse reveals a nightmare
El Faro was a quaint hostel located on the outskirts of town, where a woman named Mariela had been employed for five years. Throughout her time as a waitress there, she had seen it all, from solitary travelers to those in need of refuge, but that particular night felt different, and deep down, she sensed that something might be terribly amiss.
In the dead of night, a man named Rubén Cifuentes checked into the hostel along with a teenage girl who appeared to be no older than 14. The man claimed to be the girl’s stepfather. The girl kept her gaze lowered, but this was nothing new for Mariela. She understood that teenagers could be reserved, so she didn’t think much of it.
Yet, in the following days, the stepfather and the girl only returned to the hostel at night and departed every morning. They never availed themselves of any additional services.
One peaceful evening, Mariela took fresh towels upstairs. As she walked by room 207, a sudden thud and a harsh male voice caused her to pause. She reminded herself to disregard it and continue on her way.
Later, while she was shaking out a rug, she noticed that the bathroom window in 207 was slightly ajar. Unable to resist, she peeked inside, and the scene made her freeze in place.
A girl was sobbing on the bed, her arms covered in bruises. Rubén had a firm grip on her wrist, speaking to her in a low, menacing voice. Mariela could see the terror reflected in the girl’s eyes.
Doubt crept in, and she began to question whether Rubén was truly the stepfather of the young girl. Although she understood it wasn’t her responsibility to intervene, she felt compelled to inform the local authorities about her concerns.
Meanwhile, Mariela paced the hallway, contemplating whether she had made the right choice. Suddenly, she heard loud banging from upstairs. She hurried to see if everything was alright and knocked on the door of room 207.
“Is everything okay?” she inquired of Ruben, who attempted to slam the door before declaring it was none of her concern. However, Mariela refused to let him. Instead, she turned to the girl, who was clearly terrified, and reassured her, “Don’t worry, the police are on their way.”
Upon hearing this, Ruben became furious and seized the girl by the arm, trying to flee. But it was too late. The police officers had already arrived. They handcuffed Ruben when he attempted to shove them aside and began questioning the teenage girl, who felt a wave of relief wash over her at that moment.
She clarified that Ruben was indeed her stepfather, but after a dispute with her mother, he had kidnapped her, and they had been moving from one hostel to another for weeks.
The girl, Lucia, was taken to a shelter until her mother could come to get her.
Mariela felt a sense of relief that her instincts had been correct about Ruben. That night, a compassionate hostel worker helped save the young life of the teenage girl.
